PDF software development, that became a basis for PDF Xpansion technology, was started in 2002. PDF library was a core of the technology; this allowed making PDF files out of EMF files which can be received during printing on a virtual printing device. The library would create PDF documents corresponding to the actual (at that time) PDF specification 1.4.

Since its third generation, PDF Xpansion technology has been available to software developers (consumer software developers or corporate workflow systems developers) as an independent product (PDF SDK).

The current version of the PDF Xpansion technology corresponds to Adobe® PDF specification 1.7 and can accomplish almost any PDF-related task, including creating, viewing and modifying PDFs and converting to and from many other formats.

PDF SDK libraries enable software developers to accomplish any PDF-related task within their own software.

The PDF SDK consists of the following libraries:

PDF Direct: create and save PDF files, add new pages using "draw" technique (or print procedure)

PDF Quick View: load, read, display and print

PDF Quick Viewer: ready PDF Reader with built-in user functionality, also available as ActiveX and .NET Control

PDF Quick Converter: import images, text and HTML files into PDF documents; export text from PDFs, export PDF pages as images

PDF/A Direct: create and save PDF/A files

PDF/A Converter: convert PDF documents to PDF/A-1a, PDF/A-1b

PDF Builder: create new pages in PDFs and fill page content objects

PDF Rich Edit: edit pages in PDFs by modifying page content objects

Several extensions augment the core features, for example: bookmarks, watermarks, comments, forms, and document merge.
